Diabetes is a metabolism disorder where the body does not produce or response to insulin properly. There are two types of diabetes, known as type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes happens when the body does not produce any insulin, therefore unable to control the sugar level in the blood. Type 2 diabetes happens when the insulin in the body is not enough or not responding to the glucose. Known as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes is the more common condition that will be discussed in detail in this article.

Lifestyle preferences and genetics are two of the most common causes of Type 2 diabetes. Other possible but less likely causes could be medication complications that affect the body insulin systems or existing conditions. Genetic predisposition to Type 2 Diabetes is plainly understood, as it is without complexities. If there are relatives with the condition, then chances of the offspring developing this type of diabetes is very high. You can do a diabetic risk assessment test by using the genetic genotypes of the parents.

Diet for Diabetes Type 2: Watch your Carbs

I have handled several patients who have already asked me about how to start their diet for diabetes type 2, the most common kind of diabetes. When the body does not produce enough insulin that is needed to absorb glucose or when the insulin is not properly used, type 2 diabetes occurs. The best ways to control this condition are to have a proper diet and to watch carbohydrates intake.

You can actually count the grams of carbohydrates and take limited servings per meal to control the sugar in your blood. To start off this habit, you have to know that one carbohydrate serving is equivalent to 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Type 2 Diabetes Among Children Today

Up until the last decade or so, type 2 diabetes was referred to as “adult onset diabetes,” which meant that it took time to develop in older, overweight adults, typically between 40-50 years old. But with a more sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits among children, they, too, are coming down with type 2 diabetes, along with other health problems prevalent among adults. Because of this, we need to stop referring type 2 diabetes as adult onset diabetes. Up until a decade ago, type 2 diabetes was very rare in children. But today, it’s become the norm among children.

Do you want a really sad statistic? Statistics show that if current trends continue, one out of very three of our children born in 2000, here in America, will develop diabetes in their lifetime. For African and Latino kids, it’s one out of very two.
